British Carriage Dogs Print

The British Carriage Dog Society exists to help preserve the working heritage of the Dalmatian as a coaching dog.  In past centuries Dalmatians would often accompany horses and carriages on their travels.  They would act as guards and decoration, protected the passengers, reassured the horses and killed vermin in the stable at night.  The Dalmatian is an endurance dog and its efficient trot enables it to cover long distances without tiring.

The society runs the annual national Trials, the purpose of which is to demonstrate and test the Dalmatian's traditional role as a companion to man. The trials demand both control and fitness, as dogs are judged on their obedience and capacity for endurance.

The Society also offers advice and support to any other person or organisation who wishes to run a Carriage Dog Trial in the UK.  Exhibitors compete as a ridden handler or in a carriage over distances of up to 25 miles.

The British Carriage Dog Society will be joining us again at the Hop Farm in 2010, with a great arena display showing of the dalmatians obedience and carriage dog work.
