Guide Dogs For the Blind Association Print

For many blind and partially sighted people, the road from diagnosis with sight loss to independence is a long and difficult one.

A major part of this support is our provision of the iconic guide dog service.  Guide Dogs is a world leader in the breeding and training of working dogs, and our rigorous processes ensure we provide a carefully selected guide dog that meets each client's specific needs.  This can be extremely complex, especially as many people we work with have additional disabilities.

Sometimes a guide dog is not the most appropriate way to support someone with sight loss, or it may be that other skills are needed before training with a guide dog.  Guide Dogs can provide help with training in orientation and mobility, independent living and communication skills - essential things to ensure that no blind and partially sighted person gives up on their "mobility journey" .

The core guide dog service receives no government funding and costs around £46m per year,  The lifetime cost of one guide dog is just under £50,000 and a guide dog owner could have up to eight dogs in a lifetime.

At Paws in the Park, there will be a number of different Guide dog displays and experiences including; Puppy training the Guide dog way.
